In the Science Fiction community...

...fans take an active part. Fans administer the Hugo Awards and produce the World Science Fiction Convention -- and hundreds of other conventions round the world, attended by dozens or thousands. Fans write the amateur publications, by fans, for fans, called fanzines -- the word "fanzine" was coined by Russell Chauvenet in the 1940s -- with essays, reviews, letters of comment, rarely fiction. SF runs through fan activity like a thread through beads. Now and then a fan will become a pro; some pros are fans; it's a various world.
