Fans write the amateur publications, by fans, for fans, called fanzines -- the word "fanzine" was coined by Russell Chauvenet in the 1940s -- with essays, reviews, letters of comment, rarely fiction. SF runs through fan activity like a thread through beads. Now and then a fan will become a pro; some pros are fans; it's a various world.
