I’m extremely pleased to be able to announce that beginning this month the Collecting Science Fiction Books web site will be featuring a monthly column by celebrated fan writer John Hertz titled, A Fan’s View. In each installment John will be sharing some of his thoughts and insights on genre works, both old and new, with a perspective I think you’ll find fresh, unique and perhaps a bit challenging.

John was nominated for a Hugo Award as Best Fan Writer in 2006. In 2003 he was given the Big Heart Award, highest service award in the SF community. His first installment is a look at The Best of Xero by Pat and Dick Lupoff, a selection of essays from their legendary science fiction fanzine Xero.

In the coming weeks I’ll also be adding several new features to the site, including Reader Polls, Forums and the latest News from RSS feeds around the SF book community.

You can keep abreast of updates to the site by subscribing to the monthly newsletter of SF Bookworm and the Collecting SF Books site, Distant Suns. You can subscribe here using the form on the left however those subscribing through the Collecting SF Books web site will also receive a 5-part Quick Course on collecting science fiction books.

The Clarion Science Ficiton and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop, established in 1968 by Robin Scott Wilson, Kate Wilhelm and Damon Knight, is the oldest and most well-respected workshop of its kind. A great number of superb science fiction and fantasy writers are alumni of the workshop including Samuel R, Delany, Joe Haldeman, Thomas Pynchon, Arthur Byron Cover, and the late Octavia E. Butler.

Clarion recently announced it’s move from Michigan State University, it’s home of 37 years, to the University of California San Diego for it’s 2007 program. A new Foundation has been established to help fund the seminal workshop program. The following is an announcement of an auction to help support that effort.

Not only a worthy cause but probably an opportunity to pick up a collectible item or two.

—————————————————————————–
Here’s the announcment from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America web site:
