If you are not familiar with gemmel i both feel sorry for you and envy you. sorry that you have missed out on the greatest writer of heroic fantasy since howard and envious that you can read all his books for the first time. i personaly have a copy of every one and have read all of them at least twice.

Jeff,
I have to admit I'm not familiar with David Gemmel. I'll have to give him a go. Thanks for the recommendation.

Alan,
While I'm at it I suppose I would put in a vote for the Late David Gemmel. I'm of the opinion that he reinvigorated Heroic Fantasy in the last few years. He made the noble hero popular once again. His novels Legend and Winter Warriors are personal favorites.

Alan,
I would include "Worms of the Earth" and the Short horror stories "Black Canaan" and "Pigeons from Hell". His Sword and Planet story "Almuric" is also worthy of mention.
Sorry for the brief comment previous to this one. I failed to notice your request for feedback on more authors. My apologies.

Jeff,

I agree. Howard is a very good addition to the list. Creator of Conan the Barbarian, he practically invented sword and sorcery as a sub-genre. He’s still extremely popular and very collectible.

I’ve had a couple of other private comments on the list and I’ve noticed most people seem to think I was trying to compile a comprehensive list of collectible or “best” authors. That was not my intention.

I wanted to limit the list to a reasonable number of collectible authors and twenty seemed like a manageable count. There are a great many wonderful, collectible authors that I didn’t include. I was hoping that anyone who wished to would, like you, suggest others who belonged on the list along with a few words as to why they should be included and which works to look at that highlight the author’s work.

With Howard I would probably cite the early Solomon Kane and King Kull stories, possibly the stories he wrote in Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos and, of course, the Conan books. Any others you would single out?
